As I describe in the introduction to my coffee table book, Art of Winter, the winter of 2010-2011 was my first winter in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Having lived in Madison, Wisconsin for fourteen years, I thought I knew what to expect - lots of snow! I quickly learned that if I had not gone for walks in the morning I would have missed seeing some spectacular creations made of ice and snow.
When I realized what there was to see, single digit temperatures and cozy warm flannel sheets did not keep me house-bound. I eagerly greeted the morning with camera in hand. Winter soon became my favorite season for all its splendor.
These and other photos can be found in Art of Winter and is available for purchase. When I showed some of these pictures to a neighbor, he remarked, "I never knew winter could be so beautiful."
I hope you fall in love with winter just as I did, or gain a new appreciation for it.
